When evaluating more closely, you find that 9 of the Jacket's top 10 in percentage are those that are willing to "park in front of the net" (Juice is the 10th). It is the same in Basketball - high rebounder's have high shooting percentage - clean up the garbage, so to speak.

Keep bringing the stats - I love itAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5796383459721793585.post-62339195605276044212011-05-24T22:18:57.170-04:002011-05-24T22:18:57.170-04:00Thanks, Pete.

(Recall, the second highest shooting percentage on the team was credited to Tom Sestito, whose stock in trade is the "greasy" crease shot.) But yes, the shot quality discussion is a very important one to have...powderpuff outside shots count the same as Rick Nash power moves to the goal - they just don't yield goals as often.

As for Dorsett, I suppose the question is, "Can we afford to have that type of player?" The one who can drive on net and strike out more often than not? If we want the CBJ to be a playoff team, then ribbons for effort aren't exactly ideal. The numbers tell me that Jared Boll has a greater upside (and I can't believe I typed that).

As to your last question, I'll have to defer for the time being. It'll take a lot more research than I have time for at present. Maybe later in the summer?Dark Blue Jacketnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5796383459721793585.post-58454110502170884162011-05-24T22:03:52.659-04:002011-05-24T22:03:52.659-04:00Well done DBJ. Isn't that something of an oxymoron type statement from Rimmer? 'Well we lost, but we out shot them'. Down the stretch, you helped me find a little half diagram of the ice, that didn't even extend to the top of the circles, but I was able to chart all but one of 5 games worth of our opponents goals on that chart. In other words, their shots counted for more than ours because they were taken from prime real estate (i.e. the slot, or the edge of the crease). I think that is where 'scoring chances' emerges for consideration.

If we take lots of shots from poor positions on the edge, it should show up in a low shooting percentage. Is that what we are seeing in your numbers?

The irony of Derek Dorsett is that he does the work to get himself into prime scoring positions, he simply doesn't have the hands to bury those opportunities. Think back to our last playoff game at Detroit. The only player who consistently made it into those areas was 'Doors'. Osgood was credited with being on fire, but realistically, Doors just doesn't have the offensive skills to bury those, even though he was the only player with the heart to get to the good spots. That's just the way it is, and my sweater has "Dorsett" on the back of it, so I am not being biased against him.

We have seen this a couple of times in the Stanley cup playoffs this year. If a team (think Tampa Bay) is shooting a lot from the edges, you can just watch them and know they are not going to score. One shot from the point, when everyone else has their back on the boards, and it is blocked, or the rebound goes out to the 'D', and the puck goes the other way.

There is something there DBJ. But I just can't put my finger on it. Did we win all of our games when our shooting percentage was better than the other guys?Galloshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06151870407426712857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5796383459721793585.post-30459108684491139302011-05-24T17:18:39.759-04:002011-05-24T17:18:39.759-04:00Great work, DBJ, you raise some very interesting p...Great work, DBJ, you raise some very interesting points.pete goegannoreply@blogger.com
